Mt. Lhotse

Mt. Lhotse Expedition

Lhotse stands at 8516m, making it the fourth highest mountain in the world. Mt. Lhoste better known as "south peak" and a part of the Everest massif. It is famous for its tremendous and dramatic south face. The south face of Lhotse raise 3.2KM within 2.25KM horizontal distance making it the steepest face of this size in the world. It is extermely difficult climb and rarely attempted. The south face
of Lhotse is one of the largest mountain faces in the world.

It is situated at the border of Tibet and Nepal. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest, and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000m. Lhotse has three summits: Lhotse Main 8516m, Lhotse Shar
8383m and Lhotse Middle or East 8413m.Lhotse is the best known for its proximity to Mt. Everest and the fact that climbers ascending the standard route on that peak sped some time on its northwest face.

Sometimes mistakenly Lhotse has been identified as the south peak of the Everest massif. No serious attention was given to climbing Lhotse until Everest had finally been ascended. Lhotse first climbed in 1956 as an alternative route towards the summit of Everest.

The primary route on Mt. Lhotse is via Everest's South Col. but by 1955, despite the activity on Mt. Everest, Lhotse was the highest unclimbed peak in the world. It was first climbed by the Swiss duo of Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss in 1956 on the West Face. Lhotse Shar was first climbed on
December 5, 1979 by Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter by taking the SE-ridge.The South Face of Mt. Lhotse though attempted many times was successfully climbed only in 1984 by a Czech. On May 12, 1979 Lhotse Shar summit was reached and the middle summit was climbed only on May 23, 2001.
