The Shivapuri National park is located in the northern and north western part of Kathmandu. It is the second highest hill near the Kathmandu valley at altitude of 2563m and a paradise for bird watchers. The god thing about hiking in Shivapuri area is that there are multiple options
- whether to hike for just 2, 3 hours or for an entire day - there are choices. It is ideal for people visiting Nepal who cannot go for longer treks.

"The source of Bagmati river, Bagdwar is close to Shivapuri that makes it a more interesting visit."

After breakfast, we drive 20 minutes to Budhanilkantha Temple, just 8 kms north of Kathmandu. Shivapuri conservation area is then within 10 minutes of walk. It is a protected forest
with over 500 species. Our hike actually starts from the south side of the Shivapuri area. A short walk will take us past the army check post stationed there. Nagi Gompa at 2340m is another attraction -this is famous among foreigners and locals who want to practice Buddhism and meditation.

The trek above is somewhat steep through dense forest. The views of Kathmandu valley start getting more and more magnificent. It takes us about two hours to reach the top while we enjoy leisurely lunch with good views of the landscapes and hills.

It is a hill station on the eastern side of Kathmandu, 32 km away where can drive in just 1 and half hour. Once in Dhulikhel we have a choice for doing either a day hike to nearby villages or continue on towards Nagarkot (5-6 hours will be needed for so).

"Dhulikhel is on the way to Kodari - a town in Nepal bordering with Tibet. You can visit Dhulikhel either from Kathmandu or by stopping on the way if you are coming from Tibet."

Kakani Day Hike

Trip Overview:
Kakani is a hill station on the northern side of Kathmandu. It is in Nuwakot district, 29km away from Kathmandu and is accessible by road. The drive takes just 1 and half hour. The place is famous for its breathtaking scenery and a lot of potential for day hiking- and if you are interested you can extend your hikes to a number of days!

"It is interesting how beautiful the views of high mountains and the low-land villages appear from Kakani. Many people on a day hike to Kakani want to extend their stay by a day or two."

After breakfast, we drive 29 kms north of Kathmandu to Kakani. The drive itself is interesting as we get past numerous villages negotiating the road that seems to have never ending bends. The scenery on the way is magnificent. But the thing of true beauty is saved for the moment we arrive in Kakani - the whole vista just opens up on the north side as we get off our vehicle. To the north are some of the world's highest mountains including Manaslu, Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar and many (yes many mountains).

From the main view point, there are a lot of interesting hikes possible towards north-east. There is also a century old summer villa used by the British Embassy a long ago as well as the memorial park that commemorates the victims of 1992 Thai Airways Flight 311 accident.

If we are there between February to April, we will see local people selling fresh strawberries. Trust us, their strawberries are best in the world.

We start our hike from Kakani, walk past dense forests and continue via Alle to finally end our hike at Budhanilkantha. It is a really good hike of 5 to 6 hrs. But we can take more time to rest and take photographs to enjoy on our own style.

This is how the day will be like -

07:00 AM - Breakfast at Hotel
07:30 - Pickup at Hotel, drive to Kakani (29 kms, 1 hr 30 minutes)
09:00 - Arrive in Kakani

Nagarjuna Day Hike

Located north-west of Kathmandu it takes 15 minutes by car than 2 and half hours up to the Nagarjuna hill, which is also called historical Jamacho Peak (6,300 feet). The mountain is called Nagarjuna hill because Nagarjuna's cave-residence is found there, where he performed meditation.

Besides Nagarjuna cave there are some other cave of Buddha, Mahasiddhas. One of the famous story of the Buffalo Buddha: A long time ago when Acharya Nagarjuna was living in his cave, an idiot buffalo herdsman from Kathmandu became possessed by faith in the Master, and came to him frequently offering curd and milk, etc. Once when he asked Nagarjuna to come to town, the Master refused, saying, 'If you are able to meditate upon perfect reality, sit down here'. So he did as he was told, but obsessed by his work of guarding buffaloes he could think of nothing but buffaloes. 'Visualize yourself as a buffalo.' Instructed the Acharya. So he meditated in what today is called the Cave of the Buffalo Buddha, and after a while he actually became a buffalo. His horns struck the rock above him and the holes, which today are known as his horn-prints appeared. Then Nagarjuna told him to contemplate his body in its natural state of total relaxation. Meditating according, his body became as before and his senses became sharp and alert, so he was given initiation and precepts. After he had accomplished the aim of his mediation, it is said that he shot through the roof of  the cave and went straight to the Dakini's Paradise.
